What is Endogenous Depression? Symptoms and Treatment

What is Endogenous Depression? Symptoms and Treatment

Blog Outline

Researchers and psychiatrists once divided depression into two types. Endogenous and exogenous which means from within and from without respectively. When there was no reason for depression then it was called endogenous depression, this type of depression was because of genetics. When the depression is because of trauma or any event, it is known as exogenous depression. They were treated differently at that time. But now they both are referred to as major depressive disorder (MDD) and the treatment for both types is the same. In this article,  we will see endogenous depression definition, its symptoms, and how to cope with it.

What is Endogenous Depression?

Endogenous is a Latin word meaning “from within”. It is a type of major depressive disorder. There was a time when it was considered a distinct illness, but now it is treated as major depressive disorder (MDD) also known as clinical depression. It is a mood disorder caused by intense and persistent feelings of sadness and remorse for an extended period of time. This type of mood change also affects your behavioral health and affects your sleep and appetite. In the United States, almost 7% of children face the challenges of MDD each year.

Causes of Endogenous Depression

While there is no specific reason for endogenous depression. However, there are some factors that are considered as the trigger points for endogenous depression. It is believed that it may be caused by a combination of these:

  • Genetic factors
  • Biological factors
  • Psychological factors
  • Environmental factors

Depression is usually caused by trauma like having a breakup, losing a loved one, or any specific phobia. But endogenous depression does not have any exact trigger points and its symptoms start to appear suddenly and for no reason.

Endogenous Depression Symptoms

If you have endogenous depression, then your symptoms will start to appear suddenly without any apparent reason. People with MDD exhibit a variety of indications that help in understanding the situation. Symptoms of MDD and endogenous depression are the same. Here are the symptoms of endogenous depression:

  • Persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness
  • Fatigue
  • Lack of motivation
  • Loss of interest in hobbies that once enjoyed
  • Acute Stress
  • Trouble concentrating and thinking
  • Feeling anxiety all the time

Risk Factors for Endogenous Depression

Endogenous depression is because of cognitive or biological stress, not because of external factors. If you know someone who is having endogenous depression, then there is a chance that he has a family history of related problems. There are some co-occurring disorders that come with endogene depression. It usually occurs with anxiety, specifically generalized anxiety disorders (GAD), and other mood disorders like bipolar disorder.

How to Diagnose Endogenous Depression?

Depression can be diagnosed by your mental health professional. First, they need your medical history to evaluate your condition. After reviewing your medical history, they will ask you for symptoms. Your doctor might give you a questionnaire and ask you to fill it out. From this form, they will find out whether you have MDD or not.

The main criteria is “depressed mood or loss of interest or lack of motivation and feeling helplessness”.  Although this questionnaire used to differentiate exogenous and endogenous depression, now they are treated the same.

How to Treat Endogenous Depression?

Treating both types of depression endogenous and exogenous is not an easy process, but it can be treated with the combination of therapy and medications. But there is a small problem, there are some disorders that come with depression, including ADHD and other anxiety issues. There are different ways to treat depression. Let’s discuss them

Medication

The most common way to treat any disorder or illness is medication. But for depression, medication management is extremely necessary as the pills can affect your daily life if not taken appropriately. The most common pills used for treating clinical depression include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. These medications increase the level of brain chemicals which results in minimizing depressive behavior.

Therapy

Psychotherapy also known as talk therapy is a perfect way to deal with endogenous depression. This type of therapy involves a meeting with a therapist on a daily basis. There are two main therapies involved in this psychotherapy including cognitive behavioral therapy and interpersonal therapy.

Cognitive behavioral therapy helps you take control of your negative thoughts and freshen up your mind with positive thoughts. In this way, you can control your depressive behavior and be happy in your life.

Interpersonal therapy helps you through disturbing relationships that were ruined because of your bad behavior. This therapy is used to make your relationships better with family, friends, and loved ones.

Usually, a combination of both medication and therapy is used to treat depression.

  • Drinking 3 to 4 liters of mineral water daily.
  • Eating nutrient-rich food.
  • Quitting smoking and drinking
  • Waking up early in the morning
  • Doing activity or exercise for at least 30 min.

By following these habits, you can change your life and minimize depression.
